Denounce racism and the Harper government's complicity in torture
Special radio programme on Off the Hour, from 5 to 6pm at CKUT 90.3 FM
Over 230 people have contributed money to the solidarity fund for Abousfian
Abdelrazik. This act - taken in spite
of the risk of being charged criminally under the "Al-Qaeda and Taliban
regulations" for having directly or indirectly financed or collected money
to support Mr. Abdelrazik - was intended to force the Canadian government to
keep its word and issue an emergency passport upon submission of proof of a
purchased airplane ticket. This passport would allow Mr. Abdelrazik to
return home to Canada after having been in exile in Sudan for over 6 years,
during which time he was imprisoned and tortured by the Sudanese government,
with complicity of the Canadian government. Ultimately, Minister of Foreign
Affairs Lawrence Cannon refused to issue the emergency passport. As a
result, the flight Mr. Abdelrazik was due to board left without him.
On Tuesday, April 28th -- which will mark the ignoble one-year anniversary
of Abousfian Abdelrazik's entry into the Canadian embassy in Khartoum, where
he continues to live -- we are asking all those who support Mr. Abdelrazik's
immediate return to Canada to come out and contribute to Mr. Abdelrazik's
support fund. Lend your voices to those of people who have already
contributed, and share your perspectives on why it is important to be a part
of the growing number of people who refuse to fall prey to the
fear-mongering and paranoid discourse pertaining to "national security". By
doing so, together, we will challenge the Canadian government's position
that it can charge those contributing funds to facilitate Mr. Abdelrazik's
return.
Gathering on April 28th at Parc Émilie-Gamelin/Berri Square for a "5 à 7" -
fundraiser and speak-out by those who contributed to bringing Mr. Abdelrazik
back home. If you can't come to the park, tune in to CKUT 90.3 FM from 5pm
to 6pm for a special programme on Off the Hour. Guests to the show will
explain the details of the case and will speak about why they are supporting
Project Fly Home. Make a live donation and show your support for Mr.
Abdelrazik!
Mr. Abdelrazik's case, important in itself, has exposed a broad public to a
much deeper problem that concerns every single one of us: from the most
vulnerable non-citizens (dozens of whom were rounded up in mass factory
raids in early April in southern Ontario and are now facing cruel
deportation with no concern for their lives and well-being), to refugee
claimants and permanent residents (who, under the draconian secret trial
system, can be stripped of the most basic legal rights and forced to live a
life of constant state surveillance -- either incarcerated or in their own
homes - under the perpetual threat of deportation), to the more privileged
in our society. Now, more than ever, a common front is imperative to
express our clear opposition to the Harper regime's racist practices,
complicity in torture and callous disregard for justice & dignity.
This action is being called as part of a series of events happening across
the country, on May 4th and May 5th, in the lead-up to Mr. Abdelrazik's
legal team making a court motion, on May 7th, to compel the government to
bring
Mr. Abdelrazik back by "any safe means at its disposal". This is being
argued on the basis of section 6 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
which states, "Every citizen of Canada has the right to enter, remain in and
leave Canada." It is very important to maintain high public pressure on the
government: there is no reason the government can not act immediately to
bring Mr. Abdelrazik home, and there is no guarantee that a positive court
ruling would bring Mr. Abdelrazik home promptly.

home as soon as possible, a rally will take place on May 4th at 11:45 am in
front of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office in Ottawa, 80 Wellington
